3 Learning Avenues That Aren’t Books

I get that not everyone loves to read, and reading should not be the only way to learn. In this article, I will be sharing three of my favourite channels to learn about investing that could come useful when you are going for a walk, a casual jog in the park or when you need a break from work/school but just can’t stay away from your phone.

The first one is a Youtube channel that I have recently started listening to it more, which is ARK Invest. If you haven’t heard about it before, ARK Invest is an investment management firm based in New York City, founded by Cathie Wood in 2014. ARK Invest focuses on investing in disruptive technology. Just to name a few of the sectors that they invest in are artificial intelligence, DNA sequencing, robotics, blockchain technology and of course, cryptocurrency. Cathie is someone who articulates her idea very well, and isn’t afraid to speak of her mind, and does so intelligently. While there are always two sides to a coin, some critics have commented that ARK’s return are not as great as it claims to be. Statistical tests came back with a double negative, which means those tests cannot conclude that the performance was not due to luck. My personal thought is it’s still too early to put a verdict on ARK. The team is doing a great job sharing knowledge and their opinions on Youtube, so why not?

The second channel I listen to all the time is a podcast from The Motley Fool Australia (a branch of the US Company). A good thing I like about this podcast is that it is easily accessible over a myriad of apps such as Spotify, Apple Podcast, Pocketcast, Listnr and many more. The format of the podcast is being done like a Q&A session, or a very informal interview. It’s like listening to a long conversation between two very knowledgeable people. The host (Scott Phillips) is The Motley Fool’s Chief Investment Officer in Australia. The reason why I prefer this podcast over the others is that they cover the latest finance news that happened over the week (they usually record on Thursday and the episode will air on Friday). On top of it, they also have a weekly mailbag episode where they answer listeners’ questions. The Motley Fool do offer various premium subscription services, and occasionally you may find some discounts given from the podcast. (Disclaimer: I am not a subscriber to their premium service)

If you are familiar with reddit, or just someone who likes to read forums, you have to try out strawman.com. Is is a an investment club built for the Australia Stock Exchange (ASX) only. You can sign up for an account (which is entirely for free) and join in the conversation with many others on their thoughts and opinions on shares on the ASX. As a start, you are given $100,000 to build your own virtual portfolio by investing in the ASX, including ETFs. You get to follow other private (and some insanely brilliant) investors and join in the forum discussions on the latest trending stocks, company’s reports and announcements.
